GTA San Andreas on iPhone: Original vs Definitive

Updated Nov 4, 2026
Sid compares two illustrated editions of the same palm-lined city

Choose the original mobile edition if you want the classic iPhone release or need its lower listed hardware requirements. Choose Definitive Edition if you specifically want the remastered presentation and have a supported device. Before changing editions, check your saves and the exact app name: “San Andreas on iPhone” describes more than one product.

There is a useful wrinkle in the current requirements. Apple’s listings allow the original on iOS 13 and the Definitive release on iOS 16 with an A12 Bionic chip or newer. Rockstar now requires iOS 17 for updates and technical support. Those statements cover different things. An older installation may still run while falling outside the publisher’s update policy.

We checked the two US App Store listings, Rockstar’s mobile announcement and support notice, and the identity of the current builds.io catalog release on November 4, 2026. This is a version-and-source comparison; it does not rank frame rates from a device benchmark.

The table separates publisher requirements from the identity of a particular catalog build. For the latest compatibility information, open the original App Store listing or the Definitive listing.

The original mobile version already has its own changes

“Original” here means the earlier mobile edition. Its listing describes graphics adapted for phones, support for Made for iOS controllers, customizable touch controls and cloud saves for Rockstar Social Club members.

That makes the choice more specific than “old graphics or new graphics.” You may already like the mobile controls and have a long-running save in that app. Keeping that setup has value even if another edition offers a different look. The older list of iPhone models in the marketing description should not replace the listing’s current Compatibility field when you check a device.

What Definitive adds to the choice

Rockstar released the mobile Definitive games in December 2023 as individual purchases as well as a Netflix release. Its mobile launch announcement specifically calls out Classic Lighting, a mode intended to bring back the appearance of the original games’ skies.

Classic Lighting is a setting in the remaster. It does not turn that app into the earlier mobile release, merge their versions or tell you which one will perform better on your phone.

If the remaster’s presentation is the reason you are interested, inspect footage from the iPhone edition and check the supported-device list before choosing it. A console comparison or an App Store review from someone with another device cannot establish the result you will get.

Can an older iPhone still play San Andreas?

Start with the exact app, then check the operating system and hardware together. Updating iOS does not give a phone a newer chip; the Definitive listing’s A12 requirement remains relevant.

Rockstar’s August 2026 support notice explains the other boundary: games may remain downloadable and playable below iOS 17, but those systems no longer receive game updates or technical support. So “it installs” and “the publisher still supports this setup” can have different answers.

For a phone that cannot reach the requirements of the edition you want, changing the signing method does not solve the hardware limit. Check compatibility before registering a device or buying another copy.

Keep your existing save until the new edition is settled

Treat the two apps as separate installations. Cloud saves mentioned for the classic mobile app are not evidence of automatic transfer to Definitive Edition.

Before removing an existing installation, identify the edition holding your progress and confirm its available backup options. Only delete the old copy once you have established how your particular save will be preserved. This comparison does not promise cross-edition transfer: no such transfer was tested for this article.

The same caution applies to old Netflix instructions. The 2023 launch announcement describes the launch, not a permanent entitlement. Check the current Netflix games list before treating a subscription as an installation route. The two Apple listings above identify the editions being compared here.

Which San Andreas is on builds.io?

At our November 4 catalog check, the main San Andreas card lists 2.2.21. The attached package’s app identity and version match the classic mobile listing. It should be understood as that release, not as a shortcut to Definitive Edition.

Use the card for current build details and installation. If this is your first builds.io device registration, Apple processing may take up to 72 hours; the app page and your device status determine the next step. The iOS sideloading guide covers the broader installation choices.

If you arrived through the Android emulator article, this is a different decision: choosing a native iPhone release rather than attempting to run an Android game.

Make the choice in this order

Existing progress first, device compatibility second, presentation third. Keep the classic edition if it already gives you the experience you want. Pick Definitive for its remastered presentation after checking its device requirements and planning what happens to your old save.

For the classic builds.io release, the catalog card above remains the place to check the version and install. For Definitive, use its separately named official listing. The edition name is the detail that keeps the rest of the comparison useful.
